Main Room Reconstruction Update
(11/10/10)
Our Main Room is still closed due to the August 9 fire. The building is
in the process of being completely replaced. The old building has been
removed and we expect work to begin on the new building next week.
If all goes to schedule we should be back up and running in time for
the January sale, however this is still tentative at this time.
Friends Give $300,000 to Improve Library
(6/10/10)
On June 9 the Friends of the Palo Alto Library (FOPAL) approved two grants
totaling $300,000 to improve libraries serving Palo Alto.
The first grant is $100,000 in support of the Palo Alto Library Foundation's
"Launch Our Libraries" campaign to raise funds for the purchase of furniture,
equipment and books for the new and renovated libraries 2008's Measure N will
fund. "FOPAL's pledge is our campaign's first ''Visionary'' contribution and
is a great boost to all of our joint efforts to provide our citizens with the
best library system and books possible", said Bern Beecham, President-elect
of the Foundation.
The second grant is $200,000 for FY 2010/11 to the Palo Alto Library for
programs for children, youth, and adults, and for collections, including a
special sub for the collections at the College Terrace and Downtown branches
when these reopen after remodeling.
"These two grants are made possible by the tens of thousands of hours
volunteered at FOPAL's monthly booksale", said Jim Schmidt, President of FOPAL.
"Furthermore, these grants in 2010 complete a remarkable decade of donations,
what I call 'two for ten' more than two million dollars in ten years."
Palo Alto Library Director Diane Jennings said: "Libraries across the country
are facing difficult times during this economic downturn. When the use of our
libraries continues to increase, and city funding is decreasing, we are
fortunate to have such a dedicated and successful Friends organization."
