Boards illustrate alternate bindings. Front cover and spine are light blue cloth with embossed banner title and illustration of "Jacob's Dream". Rear cover is maroon leather (?) with intricate embossed design and gilt titles. Sample strip of third binding glued inside front cover. No DJ, probably as issued, but both both front/rear covers have fold-in panels with embossed title and illustrations. Patterned endpapers. Beautiful 3-color presentation page (unused), followed by 8 color + 11 B&W plates, then title page. Main part of book is illustrated with B&W reproductions from wood engravings. Pagination is random (sometimes missing) as if pages were bound together from other sources. At the end there is a two-page ad for the book, describing 4 alternate bindings, then a section of ledger pages for recording subscriptions (one page has been removed). Minor wear to edges, binding square and tight.

Pages unmarked though browning at the edges. This is brilliant journalism and a fascinating close-up of one of our more important authors.

Archer Thomas Croxen Popular Economic Botany $20.00 Reeve & Co, London, 1853. HB, ACC Text block still bound tightly, but front cover has cracked loose, barely holding on. Back cover also cracked but not so severely. Bookstore sticker on rear paste-down. Dark blue cloth cover with gilt image of twig with leaves on front, gilt design and lettering on spine. Front cover was probably quite beautiful when new, but is faded, soiled, and covered with splotches of faded color. Book contains 20 full-page color plates, each showing a variety of plants. Plate I also serves as the frontis, with protective tissue; both plate and tissue show foxing. Most plates show some foxing. Illustrations apparently not printed on acid-free paper. Text pages are toned at edges but don't show foxing unless they are next to a page with a plate. In spite of its flaws, it's a handsome book, and the botanical illustrations are charming.
